But undoubtedly Quinto's biggest personal landmark occurred in 2011 when he came out in an interview with New York magazine. The revelation made headlines around the world. "I remember being overwhelmed by the response, but in a positive way," he says. "It was an incredibly transformative time for me."

He's typically coy about the plot but the early footage GQ has seen shows Spock in the centre of the action once again: one spectacular early set piece sees Quinto stranded inside an erupting volcano and later in a frenetic chase with a certain Sherlock star. "Britain's own Benedict Cumberbatch!" says Quinto. "Working with him was a blast."

Though he enjoys playing the logical, emotionless Spock, the real Quinto is more carefree. "I can be a little bit of an instigator," he says gleefully. None more so than the night out while filming Into Darkness in California last summer when the cast and crew descended on a nearby Hooters to watch the Floyd Mayweather vs Miguel Cotto fight. "We were about 45 minutes outside San Francisco, so I just said, 'Let's go out!'" Quinto recalls. "So 'Grandma' Simon Pegg got in the front seat and drove me, Chris [Pine, who plays Captain Kirk] and Benedict into the city. We were out until the wee hours." He laughs conspiratorially. "We had some great adventures." (A claim confirmed by pictures tweeted by Pegg of the bleary-eyed group recovering the next day.)
